This was always a pet peeve of mine. New medications started as part of a hospital protocol that wind up on discharge orders, leading to long-term use of an unnecessary medication. The most frustrating part about the PPI example is that, in my anecdotal experience, they weren't even indicated in the hospital more often than not. As pharmacy professionals, we should always advocate for appropriate medication use even in the most seemingly routine medications. https://lnkd.in/ejVsZ9qW

A recent study published in the European Journal of Hospital Pharmacy reveals that manual and semi-automated visual inspection methods significantly outperform automated methods in detecting particles in sterile pharmaceutical preparations. While automated methods hold potential, they currently lack the reliability needed for primary use in hospital settings. This finding underscores the critical need for thorough training in manual and semi-automated techniques for pharmacy technicians. Ensuring our teams are well-versed in these reliable methods is essential for maintaining high standards in sterile compounding and patient safety. https://zurl.co/65HD

Advancing Pharmacy Technician Roles in Oncology CareA study at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System has showcased the pivotal role of certified pharmacy technicians (CPhTs) in a pharmacist-led Oral Chemotherapy Monitoring Clinic. By integrating CPhTs, the clinic saw significant improvements in drug-specific lab and symptom monitoring and clinical pharmacy interventions. This pilot program demonstrates the value of continuous training and the expanded responsibilities of pharmacy technicians in clinical settings. With CPhTs assisting with patient interviews, coordinating care, and monitoring treatment compliance, more time is afforded to care providers across the team to practice at the top of their license.Investing in the education and credentialing of pharmacy technicians not only optimizes healthcare delivery but also ensures better patient outcomes. This study is a testament to the evolving role of pharmacy technicians in modern healthcare.Read more about this innovative approach and its implications for the future of pharmacy practice: https://zurl.co/m4WW

Interesting to see how pharmacy technicians are advancing in their roles across the globe: https://zurl.co/YjxV Recent insights from the Netherlands indicate an evolving role for pharmacy technicians within the framework of Clinical Medication Reviews (CMRs). As community pharmacies embrace more complex healthcare roles, delegating initial CMR tasks to qualified pharmacy technicians can significantly enhance operational efficiency. This strategy allows pharmacists to concentrate on more critical aspects of patient care and medication management, optimizing both patient outcomes and collaborative healthcare practices.Such integrative approaches underscore the growing importance of educating and empowering pharmacy technicians in advancing healthcare services, positioning them as essential members of the health care team.#PharmacyTechnician

It has been a long time since I have been active on social media. I would like to update you all on my journey and thank those of you that have supported and inspired me along the way. This week marks the first week since I was 15 years old in which I am unemployed. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to make this choice. I should have done this a long time ago, but I was paralyzed by the fear of failure. It had become increasingly clear, however, that I was distracted. I was not achieving my full potential as an employee or as a business owner. And I certainly was not going to fulfill my personal and professional mission and achieve my vision if I did not go all in. While I will work even harder now that my family depends on my success, that energy is focused. I hope that it allows me the mental freedom to not only excel with my business but to participate in meaningful activities outside of work. 5 years ago, I launched an online learning platform for current and aspiring pharmacy technicians. I always enjoyed educating; whether precepting students on clinical rotations or providing lectures for my alma mater College of Pharmacy. And I knew there was a need to provide an affordable path that would allow individuals to pursue a career in pharmacy. I am still surprised that I mustered the amount of work that went into this venture, all while working and trying my best to be the husband and father my family needed. I am grateful that I did; the fulfillment I have gotten from the daily engagements I have with the students and all of the gratitude they have shown over the years has been enough alone. I am thrilled to now be in a position to make this my sole professional responsibility. The success that I have achieved with this business also brings a sense of responsibility to the profession. There is a great need to educate and inspire individuals entering the pharmacy profession to be knowledgeable and possess a genuine desire to improve the medication use system and advocate for patient safety. This will include an ongoing commitment to learn, listen, and improve. I will be working to continuously improve the didactic education provided on the Pharmacy Tech Scholar platform. Also, in acknowledging the inherent limitations of didactic-only remote education, I hope to find ways to collaborate with more educators, employers, and other stakeholders to help ensure that students receive the simulated and experiential training that is needed to produce highly skilled professionals. What a journey my healthcare career has been. 21 years across retail, clinical pharmacy, administration, and industry. I am so thankful for the opportunities provided to me and the genuine interest of everyone I worked for in ensuring my professional growth. I am not sure what lies ahead, but I do know that I am far luckier than I deserve to have experienced what lies behind.
