I want to share some insights on an interview that I did differently than all the other interviews I have done in the past. I did it differently because I kept not getting feedback after my interviews, so I wanted to shake things up a little bit. I tested it and below are the results. If you have any other insights, I would love to hear. #careerservices #uiuxdesign #juniordesigners #interviews

Recently I heard someone say "Design is subjective." and I held my tongue in that meeting. Fact is that is what a lot of young designers think design is: subjective. I learned very fast that design is not made for you. It's why people who do an art piece, drawing, animation, digital art: take it to heart when you comment to change something because it is from their expressive thoughts and feelings.Meanwhile in design:"Your type is too big." "Your font is hard to read.""Your icons are too small.""Your colors are not accessible enough" The list goes on...Design is for the audience. Design can be an expression, do not get me wrong. Design just has principles. It has rules set in place. Can the rules be broken once in awhile? Of course. Is it possible to not follow the principles? Yes. Your design either made it on the company's face or it just didn't cut it. That isn't to say your design was bad, it just didn't make the cut for the communication or audience your company was looking for. I believe design can be an expression and it can be subjective in a matters of your taste. Design can be playful. It can be direct and strict. It can be political. It can be something you hate or something you love. But the question is not if you hate it or love it, but is it good design? Does it communicate well to the subject? Does it tell a story for the audience? That's why I think design cannot be subjective. Because whether it is "subjective" on your taste: design still has its own principles to follow. It's what a lot of people who are new to UI/UX industry fall flat on. Not a lot on User Experience, but a lot on User Interface. UI has principles, standards, rules; it has a set of placements for you to follow as a designer. There is no subjective opinions on UI. It either cuts it or it doesn't. There are rules set in place for this reason. It is why art is subjective and design is not. "Design is about the communicating ideas to concrete forms to the intended audience. Design does everything, but allow designers to have an emotional interpretation." (Peter Allen) I was trying to find an article that expressed something similar to how I feel about this subject, you can read it: https://lnkd.in/em4AM5gW Does A lot better job explaining it than me. #uidesign #design #designprinciples #youngdesigners

This is really good for young designers! I wish I had the resources I have now to write my resume and cover letters.

Just thinking on the process of building your portfolio and using all these other "free" portfolio sites. Why do we, as creatives, make it so hard for ourselves to showcase our work? Do you know how many websites that help you "build your portfolio" despite having it required to have a Website to apply for jobs... why is that? Let's take a look on how many sites we need to use in order to keep up with the industry and help us network. Because we all know we cannot make an account and leave the profile blank:- Creatively- Workingnotworking- Dribbble- Behance- Braintrust- Contra- LinkedIn- Instagram- Facebook- TiktokAnd yes I am on all of them except Tiktok. I was uploading my work on one of them and it made me realize I wish you can just copy the url from my portfolio and the website does the work for me so I do not have to re-upload the images and match the website's layout. Contra is the only website (in certain conditions) that does exactly what I am talking about when it comes to building your portfolio through them. I wish AI can do that when it comes to re-uploading my portfolio on all these networking sites. That would cut off a lot of work and I can focus on networking and using the site. Where is the AI that says "connect to your website" ? or "upload your url" ? I don't have a solution but I was thinking about how creatives sometimes make it hard for themselves to be seen despite having so many places to showcase their work and it makes me wonder if there is a solution to this problem. Thanks for coming to my Thoughts Talk. *written by myself without AI so enjoy the bad grammar 😅 Jk (I hope) #AI #creatives #creativedesign #designers #networking #thoughttalk #portfolio #designindustry
