Ireland squad announcement live as panel named for England and Greece games (2024)

Heimir Hallgrimsson has named his Republic of Ireland squad for next month's UEFA Nations League fixtures with England and Greece.

The Boys in Greece face England at the Aviva Stadium on the evening of Saturday, September 7, before hosting Greece at the same venue three days later.

The England game will be former Iceland boss Hallgrimsson's first game in charge since being announced as new Ireland boss last month in what was seen by many as a shock choice by the FAI.

John O'Shea, who took charge of Ireland's four games in 2024 so far, has been named as the 57-year-old's assistant head coach, while Paddy McCarthy, who worked under O'Shea earlier in the year, returns as assistant coach.

Lee Carsley has also named his England squad for next month's matches. The former Ireland player has been named Three Lions interim boss following Gareth Southgate's resignation after Euro 2024.

More on the England squad

Noni Madueke, Morgan Gibbs-White, Tino Livramento and Angel Gomes received their maiden senior England call-ups, but Kyle Walker was conspicuous by his absence from interim boss Lee Carsley’s first squad.

The 50-year-old has temporarily stepped up from his role as England Under-21s boss after Gareth Southgate left following July’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain.

Walker served as vice-captain in Germany and was an eye-catching omission from a squad for the Nations League doubleheader against the Republic of Ireland and Finland that saw Carsley called up a number of the young players.

Uncapped Madueke, Gibbs-White, Livramento and Gomes have been included, while Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish return having been left out of the final Euro 2024 squad.

Jude Bellingham and Luke Shaw missed out through injury, while Kieran Trippier announced his international retirement before Thursday’s announcement.

Ben White, who turned down a call-up in March, remained absent despite the change in coaching staff.

There was no place for Euro 2024 squad members Ivan Toney, Aaron Ramsdale, Joe Gomez, Lewis Dunk and Adam Wharton.

More on the squad

The squad includes a first call-up for Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer who has completed his paperwork and received international clearance from FIFA. The 22-year old made his Premier League debut this month for the Foxes and scored an impressive seven goals last season as he helped the club secure promotion back to the top flight.

In a further boost to the new Head Coach, captain Seamus Coleman and striker Evan Ferguson are both named in the squad following their involvements for Everton and Brighton respectively in the Carabao Cup this week, as Ferguson returns to the squad having missed the June international window with an ankle injury.

Cardiff City striker Callum Robinson, who scored in the South Wales derby at the weekend against Swansea City, comes back into the squad as well as Sunderland midfielder Alan Browne. Long-term international absentee Jayson Molumby receives his first call-up since November 2023 after his foot injury ruled him out of international action this year whilst Chiedozie Ogbene and Nathan Collins, who were ruled out of the Hungary and Portugal matches through injury, also return to the squad.

Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu remains a long-term absentee with an achilles injury whilst Burnley midfielder Josh Cullen is set to miss his first Ireland squad since 2020 as he withdrew from the squad through injury.

Welcome

Good morning and welcome to our live blog for today's Republic of Ireland's squad announcement.

Heimir Hallgrimsson has been handed a double fitness boost ahead of his first squad announcement with Seamus Coleman and Evan Ferguson both back in action for Everton and Brighton respectively in recent days.

The squad is not expected to differ much from the one named by John O'Shea for June's friendlies against Hungary and Portugal, with Hallgrimsson suggesting last week that he would lean on the former Manchester United defender and Paddy McCarthy when making his selection.

He said: “I’m not going to even try to lie about being an expert on Irish players, so that is why it is so important to have Paddy and John with me.

“This selection of the squad will probably be more or less based on their opinion, because there are three or four games maximum that the players have played in the league and you can’t jump in and say, ah, you played really good yesterday, you should be in the Irish squad.

“So they know the character of the players. And as time goes on I will definitely know more and more, so I can take over more of the selection or have more to say.

“But that is one of the reasons. I think it is really strong to have these two guys in the coaching staff.

“They have been in the last four matches and the changes I saw in those games, I thought they were good, kind of in the right direction, I would say, in my opinion."
