Graveside services for Monnie Annette Blakeney, 41, of Jacksonville were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Jacksonville with pastor Donny Barton officiating, under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
Mrs. Blakeney died Sunday, June 29, 2003 in Reese.
She was born Aug. 1, 1961 in Temple.
She was a receptionist at Blakeney & Son Plumbing in Jacksonville. Mrs. Blakeney was a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Mr. Ralston.
Survivors include her husband, David Blakeney, Jacksonville; daughter, Amber Annette Blakeney, Jacksonville; mother-in-law, Mildred Blakeney, Jacksonville; brothers-in-law, Mike Blakeney and wife, Joyce, Frankston; Kelly Blakeney and wife, Jackie, Jacksonville and Shannon Blakeney and wife, Michele, Bullard; an uncle, Danny Ralston, Ariz.; aunts, Susan Ralston, Elgin, Okla.; Barbara Breen, Temple; several nieces and nephews: Stacy and Kevin Wilson, Lee Blakeney, Casey and Candice Blakeney, Jason Henderson, Travis and Justina Willis and Jesse and Samantha Blakeney; great niece and nephew, Taytum Willis and Parker Wilson.

Burtis Cleveland
Funeral services for Burtis Cleveland, 89, of Frankston were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 30, at First Baptist Church in Frankston with the Rev. Eddie Hilburn and Carol Ray Cleveland officiating.
Burial was in Frankston City Cemetery under direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Palestine.
Mrs. Cleveland died Friday, June 27, in a Tyler hospice.
She was born Sept. 5, 1913 in Frankston to Hugh and Ethel Martin Willingham. Mrs. Cleveland was a member of First Baptist Church and worked as a waitress/cashier in the restaurant business.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond D. Cleveland in 1963; sisters, Beulah McGehee, Marguriette McGehee and Myrtle Richardson; and a brother, H.B. Willingham.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Cleveland, Ben Wheeler; a son, Raymond E. Cleveland, Austin; 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Troy McGehee, Jerry McGehee, Curtis Herrington, Jimmie Don Willingham, Curk Green and J.M. Richardson.
Dr. John C. ‘Bill’ Davis III
HATTIESBURG, MISS. — Funeral services for Dr. John C. ‘Bill’ Davis III, 65, of Hattiesburg, Miss., were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Bill M. King Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins, Miss.
Burial was at Cold Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Collins.
Dr. Davis died Saturday, June 14.
He was born July 28, 1937 to John Chester Davis III and Hazel Tyner Davis. Dr. Davis had been a professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Southern Mississippi since 1972. He was a member of the Athens High School graduating class of 1957.
He was also a long-standing member of the National Council of Social Studies. He served on numerous national committees for the organization and was a national leader in incorporating children’s literature into the social studies curriculum.
Dr. Davis served as a consultant and contributor on 12 social studies textbooks and teacher editions. He was also published in many national and international journals and was featured in many documents, conferences and presentations. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Kappa Delti Ri in addition to various national, regional and state organizations. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Dr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Pippa Davis; a son, Stuart Davis of Austin; a daughter, Debra Davis of Austin; and step-mother, Loretta Davis of Frankston.

Daniel M. Ford
Funeral services for Daniel M. Ford, 71, of LaRue were held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at the First Baptist Church in Poynor with Rev. Jimmy Davis and Rev. Bob Nichols officiating.
Burial was at the Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Frankston.
Mr. Ford died Wednesday, June 25, in a Tyler hospital.
He was born Jan. 29, 1932 in Hunt County, Texas.
Mr. Ford was a self employed master electrician. He was a member of First Baptist Chuch of Poynor and served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. Ford of LaRue; a son, Dane Jeffrey Ford of Holdenville, Okla.; a step-son, Rick Baysinger of Hurst; a step daughter, Patti Anne Evans of Belton; brothers, David Ford of Fort Worth and D.T. ‘Dorris’ Ford of Jenkinsburg, Ga.; a sister, Edna Dawson of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Janice Phillips
Funeral services for Janice Phillips, 77, of Frankston were held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Frankston with John Thompson and Mark Pedersen officiating.
Burial was in the Frankston City Cemetery.
Mrs. Phillips died Wednesday, June 25, at her home in Frankston.
She was born Dec. 23, 1925 in Frankston.
Mrs. Phillips had been an employee of First State Bank in Frankston and a secretary for Hunt Oil Co. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Frankston.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by a son, James David Hardman and a step-daughter, Sandra Ann Perkins.
Survivors include her husband, R.E. Phillips Sr. of Frankston; a son, Johnny Hardman of Frankston; a stepson, R.E. Phillips Jr. and his wife, Sheila of Spring; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janisue and Spencer Beard, Jeanie and Vic Malone of Frankston; a brother, James W. McLane and his wife, Betty of Tyler; 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Crisp died Thursday, July 10, at his residence.
He was born July 23, 1927 in LaSalle.
Mr. Crisp was an oilfield worker and a member of Full Gospel Church in Frankston. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delfus Crisp; a brother, Billy Crisp; and a sister, Rose Wilson.

Mr. Hammer died Monday, July 14, at his residence.
He was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Purcell, Okla. to Jeff Davis and Elizabeth Edwards Hammer.
Mr. Hammer was a retired Full Gospel minister.
Survivors include his wife, Alma B. Ballard Hammer of Frankston; a daughter, Gloria Ann Spencer of Frankston; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Norma James

She was born June 20, 1924, in Anderson County. She operated James Lease Services.

Donnie Parrish
PALESTINE — Funeral services for Donnie Bell Parrish, 88, of Palestine were held at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home chapel in Palestine, with the Rev. William Snidow officiating.
Burial was in Brushy Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. Parrish died Tuesday, July 8, in a Palestine nursing home.
She was born Oct. 10, 1914 in Brushy Creek community to the late Walter and Lera Rhodes, and lived in Palestine most of her life.
Mrs. Parrish was co-owner/operator of Brushy Creek Country Store for a number of years and a member of Brushy Creek Methodist Church where she served as church secretary for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Treet Franklin Parrish.
Survivors include her sister, Louise Musemeeche of Houston; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Nora Rhodes, Wilma and Gilmer Parrish; nephews, Bennie Parrish and wife Dana, Harold and Wayne Rhodes, all of Palestine, E.W. Southard of Houston; nieces, Bettye and husband, Dr. John Presley of Henderson, Earlene and Don Bishop of Palestine, Jolene and Tom Berry of Panama City, Fla.; and other nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Simmons died Sunday, July 6.
She was born Feb. 2, 1924 in Anderson County to Jack and Maggie Yates Furnish. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Neches.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Furnish, and sister, Ethelyne Simmons.
Survivors include her husband, George Franklin Simmons, Neches; sons, Robert Simmons and George Simmons Jr., both of Neches; daughters, Janie Grimes of Hondo; brothers, John Tom Furnish of San Antonio, and Marvin Furnish of Palestine; a sister, Patricia Ann Crum Alvarado of Taylor; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Lavada Eve Tarrant

She was born Dec. 24, 1920, in Frankston and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duel Jarrett Tarrant Sr.; a sister, Carolyn Merlau; and a granddaughter, Angela Arnwine.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Duel Jarrett Jr. and Johnnia Tarrant of Houston, Robert F. and Denise Tarrant of Frankston; daughters and son-in-law, Francille Latham, Sharyn and Frank Harrison, all of Frankston; a brother, Allen P. Hayden Boles
TYLER — Funeral services for Hayden Boles, 74, of Tyler were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 20, at Burks-Walker-Tippitt Funeral Home in Tyler with the Revs. Olin Boles, Fred Worthen and Brian Adair officiating.
Burial was at 4 p.m. at Myrtle Springs Cemetery near the New York Community.
Mr. Boles died Friday, July 18.
He was born April 10, 1929 in the New York Community to the late John and Lavada Boles.
Mr. Boles graduated from LaPoynor High School and Tyler Junior College. He was a member of Texas Assn. of Sports Officials and was recently elected into TASO Hall of Fame. Mr. Boles was a conductor for Cotton Belt-Southern Pacific Railroad for 43 years and was a member of United Transportation Union and of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School for several years, as well as serving as chairman of the board.

Henry Charlston Ling Jr.
CANTON — Funeral services for Henry Charlston (Buddy) Ling Jr., 77, of Canton, formerly of Frankston, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, in the Grace Bible Fellowship Baptist Church in Canton with Pastor Dan Tarno officiating and eulogy by Ben Carter.
Burial was at the Oakland Cemetery in Canton, under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Frankston.
Mr. Ling died Monday, July 21, in a Canton nursing home.
He was born Dec. 18, 1925 in Greenville, Miss. He was a heavy equipment operator and was a Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Billy E. Ling of Seagoville; daughters, Linda Varner and Annie Darnell, both of Chandler, Brenda K. Carter of Canton, Sandra Stirling of Frisco and Sheila Coleman of Garland; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Diccie Elizabeth Shugart

Mrs. Shugart died Friday, July 18, in a Frankston nursing home.
She was born Sept. 30, 1912 in Anderson County. Mrs. Shugart was a homemaker and a member of Frankston Assembly of God.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgle Shugart; daughters, Marie Shuttlesworth and Virgie Dunlap; and sons, Herbert Shugart and H.V. Shugart.
Survivors include a son, James Ray Shugart of Frankston; daughters, Katie Mattern and Nancy Morton, both of Palestine, Carolyn Southard of Maydelle, Sharon Laughlin of Frankston and Catherine Mullen of Little Rock, Ark.; brothers, Arnie Clakley of Frankston, Levi Clakley and Ernest Clakley, both of Tyler, George Clakley and Edmond Clakley, both of Carthage; a sister, Elva Saxton of Grapeland; 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Rev. Louie E. Barron
CANTON — Funeral services for the Rev. Louie E. Barron, 80, of Canton were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at First Baptist Church in Canton, with Bro. Joe Barron and Bro. Donnie Barron officiating.
Burial was in Haven of Memories Memorial Park in Canton under direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Canton.
Rev. Barron died Thursday, July 24, at his residence following a short illness.
He was born Aug. 1, 1922 in Chandler to Lee Frank and Minnie Lee Maynard Barron. He grew up in the Concord community and attended school at Edom. He married Aletha Ogletree in 1941. While working for Brookshire’s, he surrendered to the ministry in 1952. Rev. Barron attended East Texas Baptist University in Marshall. He pastored various churches in East and Southeast Texas, including First Baptist Church in Frankston.
For more than 50 years, he has unselfishly ministered to the needs of others as an active church pastor and as associate with Eubank Funeral Home, friends report.
His son, Larry Barron; and two brothers, Bill and Cecil Barron preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Aletha Barron of Canton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Annelle Barron of Whitehouse, Joe and Cheryl Barron of Plano, Mark Barron of Irving and and Linda Barron Merriman of Plano; three sisters, Aline Ivy of Lindale, LaNell Doyle of Fort Worth, and Martha Baxter of Katy; brother, Milton Barron of Tyler; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Tim Barron, Corey Barron, Matt Barron, Trey Barron, David Barron and Andrew Barron.

Obie L. Phillips
Funeral services for Obie L. Phillips Sr., 87, of Neches were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at Neches High School gymnasium with Rev. Vernon Jackson and Dr. Rufus Johnson officiating.
Burial was in Lawrence Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Palestine.
Mr. Phillips died Monday, July 21, at Sarah Bush Medical Center in Mattoon, Ill.
He was born July 11, 1916 in Palestine to the late Colonel Frank and Katie Mae Howard-Phillips.
He married his college sweetheart, Sadie Louise Perpener of Fort Worth on June 1, 1940. To this union, seven children were born.
Mr. Phillips was a member of New Chapel Baptist Church and later joined Fulton Street Christian Church in Palestine, where he served as an elder until his death.
Following his graduation from Lincoln High School in Palestine, he continued his education receiving degrees from Jarvis Christian College, Texas Southern University, and Prairie View A&M University. He did additional studies at East Texas State University and Bishop College.
Mr. Phillips, fondly known as Professor Phillips, was a retired school administrator of the Neches Independent School District. His extensive career included his serving as principal of Union Academy School in Palestine in 1939, classroom teacher at Clemons High School in 1940, principal of Clemons High School in 1945 until he retired in 1981. A new Clemons High School building was dedicated in 1957.
In 1965, he was a guiding force in the smooth transition of desegregation. Clemons High School became Neches High School. In 1977 he was interim superintendent of the district. He served 37 years in the Neches Independent School District. In 1982, he became a member of the Neches School Board where he served for 10 years.
His community involvements include: Serving as the first African American to fill the following positions: principal of totally integrated high school in Anderson County and East Texas; superintendent Neches Independent School District; member Anderson County Memorial Hospital Board; president Anderson County Sheltered Workshop Board; president Anderson County Welfare Board; president Anderson County Texas State Teachers Assn.
He was also a member of Anderson College Center (Trinity Valley Community College) advisory board; Anderson County Advisory redistricting Committee; Anderson County Farm Home Administration chairman; Anderson County Democratic Precinct 18 chairman; Anderson County Historical Commission, Black Texans Historical Society; Trinity Valley Teacher Credit Union Board; County Education District Board (CED); Friends of Howard House, Museum Board; Technology Partnership Organization Quality Work Force Planning Committee Board; East Texas Council of Governments.
Also Palestine/Anderson County Enterprise Zone; Masonic Lodge (AF & AM), Worshipful Master for 18 years; Texas Assn. of School Boards; Palestine/Neches/Jacksonville Jarvis Christian College Alumni Chapter; Jarvis Christian College National Alumni Assn.; Overall Economic Development Program (OEDP); Farm Service Agency (FSA); Community Relations Council Board; Retired Teachers Assn.; New Fellowship Christian Church Elder and General Church Board.
Mr. Phillips, who holds degrees in supervision and instruction, counseling and guidance, and administration, had established a unique record as a dedicated educator. He spent 41 of his 42 years of service in the Neches ISD, 38 of which he was principal.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Geneva Grice and Essie Washington; a brother, Harvey Phillips and two grandsons, John Phillips Jr. and Royal Eugene Phillips.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie Louise Perpener Phillips of Neches; four sons, Obie Phillips Jr. of Chula Vista, Calif., John Phillips of Reston, Va., Lorenza Phillips Sr. of Austin and Charles Phillips Sr. of Charleston, Ill.; three daughters, Katie Lee of Las Vegas, Nev., Anna Crawford and Patricia Farrow of Austin; brothers, John L. Phillips of DeSoto and Nathaniel Phillips of Denver, Colo.; sisters, Jerutha Allen, Levator Caldwell and Erie Scott of Denver, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Winifred Perpener of Fort Worth; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

DALLAS — Funeral services for David Alex Reese, 45, of Dallas were held Wednesday, July 23, at 10 a.m. at Eastgate Funeral Home Chapel in Dallas with Rev. Earnest Walt officiating.
Graveside services were Thursday, July 24, at 11 a.m. in the Frankston City Cemetery with Bro. J.A. Griffin officiating.
Mr. Reese was a member of Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church and worked as a pressman for the Dallas Morning News for 27 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Reese, and brother, Steve Reese.
Survivors include his daughters and their husbands, Laura and Andy Saylor and Kelli and Alex Chavez; granddaughters, Bailee and Breanna Chavez; mother, Betty Beard Reese; a brother, Kenneth Reese; and nephews, Josh, Matthew and Cameron.
Local relatives include uncles and aunts B.J. (Blue) and Frances Beard, T.L. Beard, T.E. (Pete) and Beverly Beard and D.A. (Doodle) and Betty Beard.
